Simple sentiment. One person cannot bear the thought of something catastrophic happening to his loved ones or to a great number of people, therefore he sacrifices himself.
Love is a dangerous disadvantage, after all. Also, boring.
[This from the man who'll fall off a roof sometime in the future.]
Then allow me to ask you this... given a choice to protect humanity and allow them to continue putting the earth in a state of decline, due to destruction of its surface and the animals which call it home, or instead, a choice to condemn humanity for its destructive behavior and reduce their numbers, so that the earth is capable of recovering from their actions...
Murders. And not open-and-shut ones, those are boring. What makes it interesting is if the murderer is competent enough that their guilt isn't immediately obvious.
I know a man whom might interest you then, he works with me as well. Though he's more of an assassin than he is a serial killer, still his murderers are far from open and shut. As for guilt, he has none. He does have one rather twisted relationship with another man whom is working against us though.
He's called the Sakurazukamori. Tends to actually work for the government of Japan, killing people off whom harm its stability.. or so goes the excuses for the assassinations anyway. It doesn't matter what sort of defenses you have or how much money you have, if he's marked you as his prey, he'll kill you. He's an onmyouji as well as an emotionless killer, which I believe works to help him in his business.
There's a great deal of information involved, but I'll be brief.
I'm a member of a group of genetically enhanced soldiers. Until recently, there have been no problems to speak of. A few months ago, one of our best soldiers began to degrade and developed extreme physical irregularities. He deserted. Another soldier went with him and shortly displayed similar abnormalities.
They started a civil war, but recently died by committing suicide.
I've since learned that those soldiers were part of a secret government project separate from the usual program. I know one of the scientists involved, but most of the relevant information is classified.
Like a missing detective, what really happened when an entire police division was wiped out, several murders written off as accidents, and the identity of the greatest thief in the world.
I'm short on cases at the moment, I'm afraid (more like he's at the center of one he can't discuss). Would you like to deconstruct a thorny moral dilemma instead?

Not interested.

[Fool; but what else to expect from a mortal, with no concept of what the sailor crystals and star seeds truly represent.]

[True, but then again, this is Sherlock. He'd turn down a high-profile case that concerns national security if it wasn't interesting enough.]

You're bold, stranger.

I've never been one for environmentalism.

You remind me of one of my comrades. He's working with me because he believes it'll be interesting.

If there's an individual or individuals to blame, one could call them murderers.
